WE ARE THE MIGHTY GREYHOUNDS!!

The Historic I. C. Norcom High School is a nationally recognized historically black high school. Formerly known as the High Street School, it was founded in 1913 and originally located at 915 High Street (True Reformers Building). After World War I, the building was relocated to the corner of Chestnut and South Streets. During this time, it was renamed in honor of its first supervising principal, Mr. Israel Charles Norcom (1856-1916). In 1953, the school was relocated to 2700 Turnpike Road until the current building erected at 1801 London Boulevard, centrally located between the revitalized downtown area and the Midtown Tunnel. The current location opened in September 1997 under the leadership of Mr. Walter Taylor.

The legacy of I.C. Norcom High School continues to play an integral role in Portsmouth community and society at large. Distinguished alumni include Delegate Nadarius Clark (Virginia House of Delegates), General Alonzo E. Short (United States Army), Tony Award winning singer-songwriter-actress Ruth Brown, and NBA star athlete, Dorian Finney-Smith (Los Angeles Lakers).
