An environmental partnership between the city of Portsmouth, the Elizabeth River Project, and the Captain Planet Foundation.
Goal: to improve ecosystem services provided by the retention pond over the course of next year.
The city of Portsmouth is going to mow the invasive plants that have taken over Norcom's retention pond and athletic fields and dig out sediment that has accumulated in the drains. A $2,500 grant from the Captain Planet Foundation will help pay for materials and plants. Elizabeth River Project staff will assist with choosing plant type and location. Students and staff will help with trash clean-up and planting native species that will attract insects, birds, and mammals. Read the full story
